If you’re considering placing the fate of your case in my hands, it only makes sense that you’d want to know a bit about me. Fair enough.
One of five children, I was born and raised in Georgia and attended DeKalb County public schools. After high school, I went to Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., where I double-majored in English and economics, earning my bachelor’s degree in 1979.
After a year teaching high school in Switzerland and England, I moved to San Diego and earned a master’s degree in economics from the University of California, San Diego in 1983. From there, I returned to D.C. to work as an economist for the U.S. Senate, a role I held until 1990. While working full-time, I attended Georgetown University Law Center at night, earning my law degree in 1991.
After law school, I moved back to Decatur to practice law and raise my family. I worked with several firms—including Sumner & Hewes, King & Spalding, and Lynch & Powell—before opening my own practice, Stubbs Law Office, LLC, in 1995. Since then, I’ve represented physically and financially injured clients in state and federal courts and handled matters such as wills, probate, and probate litigation, often in collaboration with other talented attorneys.
From 2012 to 2015, and again since 2022, I’ve served as a part-time judge on the City of Decatur Municipal Court. I’ve also held leadership roles in various professional and community organizations, including two terms as president of my neighborhood association. I’ve been elected to leadership positions in several bar associations, including: president of the DeKalb Bar Association; DeKalb County delegate to the State Bar Board of Governors; at-large member of the State Bar Executive Committee; chair of the State Bar Consumer Law Section; and district vice president of the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association.
I have three wonderful children. Justin, my oldest, graduated from Georgia College and now teaches Pre-K in Alpharetta, where he lives with his wife, Lauren. Connor, my middle child, graduated from Centre College in Kentucky and lives and works in Washington, D.C. with his wife, Corie. Sarah, my youngest, earned a degree in public health from the University of Georgia. After working in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, she returned to the U.S. in 2019 to join Pete Buttigieg’s campaign and now works in refugee resettlement and nonprofit management.
My wife, Lyn, earned her Master of Social Work in 2020 and has built her career as a family therapist in Decatur. In addition to spending time with family, I enjoy reading, walking, and supporting the Atlanta Braves. To the extent allowed by judicial canons of ethics, I remain politically active — and encourage you to be informed and active as well.
